Failing at direct mail. What am I doing wrong?

I've started doing direct mail for 2 months now sending 250 letters a week to a 1,000 names and all I've gotten is people wanting market value for their homes or people calling me names. Today I got 3 calls from the same seller so I thought he was really motivated. He ended up calling me a "maroon" which I don't even know what it means but it's pretty funny. Am I the only one going through this or this a common thing when you start direct mail?

Very common Christian. It takes time to build traction. Marketing is cumulative. Your campaign is still in its infancy and isn't even dialed in well yet. If you want to move faster, up your piece count, but bear in mind that the number of touches is very important.

You are absolutely not failing at direct mail....just a little impatient.  Just sayin' :-)
