Built basement kitchen, is it covered?

Bill Graham
Posted

Hi,

I built a basement kitchen to add a unit in the basement, I didn’t get permits, just built it with local contractors and my own skills.

Is it covered under my home insurance?
do I need to call my insurance company and tell them I built it and it’s not permitted?

Is it covered when built without a permit?
Is my tenants use of it covered in the event of a fire if they burn the house down? Or if the wiring was bad and burns the house down?

Basically is it covered bc I didn’t get a permit and just built it?

Thanks!

In my experience here in CA unpermitted work is not covered. Each state has different laws. When posting add your location so local people can

I'm not an insurance professional.
