What to renovate when renting out an apartment?

I want to rent out my apartment. What renovation should I make that will raise the rent but not cost too much? What fixing is worthwhile?

A ground level apartment in a building, rather old. No basement.

Looking at comparable properties is what it's all about. Rentals in your target range will have a pretty common set of features. Countertop materials, stainless appliances or not, w/d included or not, etc.
