Transgender concerns while in the transition
After 15 years in business I thought I had the answers to just about any tenant situation. Well, I have a new situation that has been brought to my attention. I assume a few of you will be running into this as well. I have a tenant that was born a female, started renting one of my apartments as a female , still looks like a female , even wears skirts. Fast forward 3 years … This tenant is now a transgender, has legally changed their name, their legal ID so the gender identification has an X in the designated spot. I’m totally okay with all of that. The issue is “she” walks around the apartment complex with out a shirt. “She “ 100% is still built like a female. When this was brought to my attention I called her and asked about it. She didn’t hide it at all. She said she is a transgender and anyone that asks her to put a shirt on is a transphobic, and discriminating. I immediately presented the situation to my attorney to get his input as to what my , my tenants, and “her “ legal rights are. I’m still waiting to hear back from my attorney. I also ran the situation past two local police officers and they were really on the fence as to can they do anything or not. At the end of the day they pretty much feel as though they can cite them for something as long as they still have breast…. It’s worth noting , “she” always comes home wearing a shirt , and leaves wearing a shirt. It’s just when she is doing chores outside at home that she is topless. If anyone is outside, all the tenants can see you because of the way this 11 unit complex is set up. Has anyone run into a similar situation? ??
