Survey:  What is your definition or idea of a marketing campaign?

Ryan, Dan is a Moderator so I doubt the 'spam' function will be used or implemented, especially when everyone else but you probably doesn't mind the response. On another note, I think Scott's response was the best out of all of these with the question he asked, do I need one? however I think you're all WAY off on your 'definition' of a "Marketing Campaign" You guys were more or less talking about 'techniques' then 'Campaigns' A Marketing Campaign needs to be something of a larger scale, not some silly need to rent a single house. You need to have the ability to track your results. When, where, who, how and why all need to be answered as a 'Result' of the 'Campaign' no offense Jon, but 'multi-touch' 'multi-medium' 'targeted' and 'guerrilla' are not 'Campaigns' They are 'techniques' unless you're using those 'techniques' within your campaign to track results and answer the when, where, who, why and how questions you're still shooting blind with those techniques. All in all to me a 'Campaign' is a tracking exercise to answer those questions when 'Marketing' Sorry if I offended any of you :mrgreen:

Aw shucks you guys are absolutely right, I totally misinterpreted Dan's post. I had my marketing strategy hat on and read too much into "My ideal lead gen campaign" like he was pushing a system. But I see what he's getting at now, and yeah a totally hands off marketing campaign that ran itself would be the bee's knees. Sorry for the mistake Dan, I'll definately make a note to put more thought into my actions on the forums. Some of these answers are great, can we get more into what a marketing campaign means to you? A couple more good ones and I'll be able to weave a pretty good piece.

"so drop dead simple (and effective) that it can all happen without me." That is a desirable characteristic of a campaign. Perhaps not easy, but who wouldn't want one that worked well and took no management? Maybe a referral system that your referral partners manage themselves....

Scott, maybe I used too much marketing jargon. I'll simplify for a single house. Multi-touch--I am communicating with my prospects or target audience more than once Multi-medium--a sign AND CraigsList Sustained--stay at it until you have the desired results Targeted--know your ideal demographic and get in front of them Guerrilla differentiation--stand out from the others. I.e. offer credit repair services with a lease option. In my IT business we have to get more sophisticated.

You may not like Dan's post, but that in itself is not in violation of the BP site rules as I understand them. The "Report Abuse" link notifies one of the forum moderators to evaluate the post. That will result in edits or removal as the moderator sees fit - or nothing at all if the post is in compliance with forum rules. And this function does work, you just have to understand what happens behind the scenes.

Personally I think a lot of people spend to much time in their head when it comes to a "marketing campaign". No offense to Jon - I am just reading your post as I type this in the quick reply box...but I will use what you said as a good example. I want to rent a house. Do I really need something that is multi-touch, multi-medium, sustained, targeted, with guerrilla differentiation. Or can I just put a sign in the yard? I read one thread here about how to attract a tenant for a house and lots of people went on and on with all these "multi" suggestions. To me the first question when developing a marketing campaign should be - do I need one :) When renting a house a simple sign will rent most homes.

Not so much a definition, but here are some characteristics that I shoot for: Must be multi-touch, multi-medium, sustained, targeted, with guerrilla differentiation.

A marketing campaign is when you have a goal in mind, whether you are marketing yourself, your company, a property, the message needs to be concise. What point are you trying to get across to your target audience? After you figure that out, you need to find out how you are going to move ahead with it, print ads, online ads, an email campaign, a direct mail (or all of it). Get the message together, send it out. The more you can do to get their attention the better, otherwise it's a waste of time and money. I saw Jeffrey Gitomer in Vegas this year (sales seminar) and he suggests that you buy a waste basket with your company logo on it and spend the extra money, because at least then something with your logo on it might have a better chance at sticking around. :)
