Spanish-Style Revival Stucco..Repair vs Replace or New siding?

This property I am about to start has significant amounts of stucco repair work both inside and out. I am wondering if repair and then repaint or repair then put cement board up would be the best solution for outside? Does anyone have any experience with restoring older spanish-style revival homes and a cost effective yet aesthetic conforming way?
