Thoughts on shotgun units

I'm still looking for my first property. I've seen several two-family and four-family properties with shotgun 1br. What is everyone's thoughts on the shotgun style? Are they harder to rent out (higher vacancy). Is the going rent usually lower than a normal 1 Br? Or both?
