cost to replace staircase monstrosity with straight staircase
Hello
What is the approximate cost for a professional to demo an existing turned staircase made of wood and put in a straight staircase against an existing wall? The existing doorway on the left needs to be closed off. There is another access point to that hallway around the corner. Assume all will be to code otherwise. Thank you!
Janet, best to get three estimates from reputable contractors to get an idea of what it will cost. I would suggest a qualified finish carpenter with similar previous work. Many factors to take into consideration on something like this (location, contractor schedule, availability to skilled labor...) making it difficult to give an accurate number from just a picture. A local lumberyard is the best place to find good contractors ask the staff they will know who the best is or they will direct you to the pin up board with business cards on it, big box stores, lowes/home depot, will work also. Other resources include Angies List, yellow pages, facebook, or craigslist.
Hope this helps.
the existing stair case is much safer than the one you are proposing
@Janet Lancaster I assume you plan on taking that doorway out? If not you wont get a straight stair. There has to be room to keep it to code. Room you dont have with that door there. That door looks like it goes to a hall. If so you can move that doorway down to make room for it. Measure from the landing down to the bottom stair. Then measure from the upper stair not including the landing and check and see if you have room for one. If that stair is to code you need that much room for a straight one.
The only other thing you could do is put a very large landing above the door and go down from there but that would take up the whole wall and look worse imo.
Hi Mike thanks for your thoughtful reply. Yes, we are going to close off that door to the hallway. There is access around the corner.
@Janet Lancaster - I’m curious if you have replaced the stairs and how much it has cost you? I’m thinking about moving s staircase in the middle of the House to one of the side walls, as I Think the staircase divides both the downstairs and upstair rooms and doesn’t let the natural light from front and back Windows meet. Which work was needed?
