Texas foundations worth fxing?

Most of the houses I'm looking at in nice neighborhoods (low price points of course) seem to have foundation issues ranging from cracks here and there to the house about ready to fall in on itself, floors way off and windows breaking. One sold before I had a chance to look at it and it was listed needing major repairs, warnings about where to step, etc.

I realize the soil is that nasty clay stuff and I guess houses built in the 70s are just giving it up. With enough money they can probably be leveled up but is this really worth it? Is drilling down to bedrock with new piers really a permanent fix or is the house always going to have foundation problems? I would hire an independent engineer and have it done right.

I'd love to hear if you buy these types of properties and if you feel confident about the repairs to the point that you would move your family into it.
