Carpet, cabinets, and color oh my

Hi all,

My partner and I are doing our first rehab. I am completely comfortable with the nuts and bolts decisions but no matter how much HGTV I watch coordinating colors is well beyond my abilities.

We are replacing the kitchen cabinets, repainting all walls, and reinstalling carpet. I know the basics-neutral wall colors, lighter color cabinets for smaller kitchen, etc.

My question is how much do we need to coordinate the cabinet color with the counter tops, then the wall color, and the carpet or am I over complicating it? And what color options are best for a retail sale? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Chris
