What can I do with this HORRIBLE CEILING?

Hello everyone!

I need some help. I purchased a home with this ceiling and definitely I don't like how it looks.

Any suggestions?

I want to re sell this house in the future and I want to put something nicer, yet not too expensive.

Thanks :)

I was expecting to open this up and see a picture of a ceiling that actually looks bad.  I think the texture add characters and it will probably look worse if you skim coat. May even look worse putting sheetrock over it if the person doesn't spend a lot of time to make it smooth. I've never really understood the fixation people have on completely smooth walls anyway. It can take a lot of man hours to achieve it and their time could be better spent doing something more productive.
