Question for brick repair
I need to replace one broken brick on out side front steps. It is on the horizontal section. Having never applied any mortar in my life, I am wondering what mortar to use. The offerings are overwhelming and I just might overthink the issue but I would like to use the right material. Obviously, if the replacement of a brick is better left to the ones who are experienced, I will do this easily.

You want a type s or type n mortar. Type M is too strong. I would check your local big box store for a Quickcrete product. Quickcrete makes some good products like Mortar Repair in a tube for the small amount you will need for 1 brick. You many even consider a construction adhesive to glue into place and then come back and fill the mortar joint with the quickcrete.
