I would like to offer an opinion that may be of some value to you. Please don't be offended but I will be blunt. No one is willing to help you without you giving something in return. Period. But, with that said, please allow me to explain my self.
If you are serious about REI, or even if you don't know if your serious yet or not, the first thing you need to do is some research. Check out the ultimate beginners guide here:

I know its tempting to just want to jump in for a "hands on" education as you have said, but the only problem with that is you have nothing of value to add to the relationship / partnership / mentorship, etc... You need to have something to bring to the table for someone to WANT to show you the ropes. That could be construction knowledge, labor, funding, volunteer time, ect. Also, it would benefit you immensely to learn as much about the subject on your own before even approaching someone you expect to mentor with. That will give you a great head start. I suggest learning as much vocabulary as you can. Learn to speak like an investor. Looking for a part time or temporary or even full time job as a construction laborer, real estate agent, inspector, etc. can also get you feet wet with the subject. But I strongly advise you start slowly and move one step at a time, it will show others you are serious and also help keep you from getting burned by ensuring you properly analyze deals. Good luck on your REI journey! & dont forget, READ READ READ!
