Granite countertops/ cheap house

So my question is should I put a granite countertop in the kitchen of a cheap house. The house is a large mill style home built in 1948. The counter top is really small in the kitchen ( 8x2.5") so I was going to put in granite.  Is this a good idea or is to much for the house. In other words will it increase the value of the house or am wasting my money because most people want granite countertop arnt looking for mill houses?
