mold

Part of the caulking around the tub in my very nice $900. rental has what appears to be mold. What steps need to be taken to ensure that's it's only the caulking, and there's no mold under/behind the surround or the tub?
Edited to add that I'm getting mold detection kits to gewt a little more information. Plan to oick them up Wed or Thurs, probbably set them on Sat, then take them back on Monday.
Don't know what the results will be, but it may save me a bunch of money.
