Separating utility meter for finished basement

Hello BP community,

Not sure if this is the correct forum, but figured I would ask.

I currently live in a SFH with finished basement with a separate entrance and bathroom. I want to add a small kitchen to it and rent both as separate units. The problem is that the basement and the rest of the house are on the same meter. Does any body know how much work is involved in separating the two? I'm not planning on doing the work myself, but wanted to get some advice from some one who has done this before.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Sebastian

Is your house zoned for multifamily?  In some cities it's only allowed in certain areas of town.  Your utility company should be able to give you an estimate on setting up another meter.
