How big of a dumpter should I need for 30square of shingles?

Hi,

I'm currently in the processes of rehabbing a property. (you can see more details in my other post) I have rented a 30yard dumpster because everyone I talked to said that would be plenty, even the dumpster guy himself thought it would be to much.

Well, once I have thrown out everything the previous owner left in the house and garage as well as demo the inside I have run out of space completely.  I may have even filled it a little to far.

So now I need to get another dumpster for the shingles and whatever wood needs to be replaced. (Hopefully not much wood)

What I need to know is how big of a dumpster should I get to make sure I have enough room for 30 square of shingles with only 1 layer.  The shingles are 3tabs.

Oh, and filling a 30yard dumpster all by yourself after working 9 hours at your full time job is really not that much fun.  :)

Your market may vary, but it is probably cheaper to just "switch out" the 30 than to remove it, and deliver a different size having to use a different truck.

We did the same thing several years ago (bought a used dump truck) and I don't know how we would do without it now. It's a smaller model so my hubby doesn't need a commercial drivers license to operate it. He, the hubby, also runs a landscape/lawn service and was able to build upon that business by incorporating the dump truck to haul gravel, mulch etc. He also does the same for our rehab company so we save a ton on hauling fees.

As far as the shingle thread above, most roofers here have their own dump truck or trailers and include the hauling/dump/clean-up fees in their price.  We also must have a special permit to dump shingles, so the roofers handle that too, since they are the ones that get fined if they start a job without it. If your roofer doesn't provide this service check with the waste company that you are renting the box from. Here they rent the box for a flat fee by the month, then charge additional for the dump and waste by weight. In the past if I filled a box before demo was complete, I would request an extra dump which was $60, have them return the box, and fill again. This would be much less than the rental on 2 boxes.

Great idea Shane. :clap: I know a guy who did this.

Another option is a heavy duty trailer if you are good at estimating the weight limits (what it can haul and what you need to pull a full trailer).

In either case having a vehicle that you can move from one job to another to pick up small loads is a good idea. You just need to run a decent sized operation to cover the up front costs (plus liability insurance).

We bought an old used ford dump truck for $2000. That was the best investment I made and it has paid for itself many times over. If you get going pretty steady at this then I would definately consider buying an used dump truck instead of renting dumpsters.

Yes, I understood the one you have is full.  You want to know how much space you'll need to hold the roof, and I'd guess about half or two thirds of a 30 yard dumpster.  Beachbum is pointing out that if you call the company and tell them to switch the full one for an empty one of the same size, it will be cheaper than ordering a different sized one.  That's because they will just have to send out one truck with an empty one.  The same truck will take away the full one.

I can't say for sure how much space you'll need, since I've not torn off a roof that size.  I can say I tore off a flat roof with rolled roofing.  Two layers, about 4-5 squares.  It filled up my 4 yard trailer.

Sorry for the misunderstanding...  I thought he was saying that I could have a larger one brought and swapped out.

I just called and they said that there was no discount for having another of the same size brought.  They said I will need a 20yard due to weight issues because it will be 2.7tons.  That will be another cost of $265.

I've already been trying to decide if I should give the extra $1000 to have the old ones pulled off but now I will need another $1265 to have them pulled off.  I may just put a second layer of shingles on.

Any insight on this...  what would you do if there was only 1 layer currently on the house and it will be sold right away?

I think you can go up to three layers in most locations.  Check with your building department.  Are there soft spots or damage that needs repair?  Why does your roofer want to take them off?  If you have a solid base, I can't see where spending the extra money will pay back anything when you sell.

I'm not sure if I wasn't clear on my first post or if you read it wrong but the thing is already FILLED!  I'm not going to empty it back out in order to have a larger one brought it.

I'm just looking to see how much I should need for the shingles and stuff as the 30yard is already full.

So here's my guess, and its just that.  30 squares at 100 sq.ft/square is 3000 sq.ft.  Figure an inch thick for a single layer, and you have 250 cu.ft.  Divide by 27 to get cu.yd., and you get about 10.  You're not going to pack them tightly, though, so figure double that.  If they're less or more than an inch think (don't have a roof handy :D) adjust accordingly.
