Death in the family. How soon is too soon?

Hi All, friends of mine just lost lost their mother/mother-in-law a few days ago after a prolonged illness. My question is: Since there will never be a "good time" to bring it up, is there a "too soon" time to start investigating and asking questions about what may happen with the home? I know that there are several strategies that could be employed here under varying circumstances, but I don't want to come off as a ghoul, taking advantage of someone still grieving.

Whether a personel friend or family member or someone I've never met, is there a best, "good time"?

If any of you have been in this situation or a similar one I would love to get your opinion. Thanks in advance for any advise you may have.

If it were me I'd probably talk to the child in law and just keep it brief. Tell them, "Hey, when the time is right, I do deal in real estate and can help you guys with the house. Now's not the right time but when it is, if I can help just let me know." They know their spouse better than you do and will know when it's time to talk business.
