New York TAXES

hey everyone, now I'm no experienced real estate investor so I can't seem to wrap my head around this. How in Gods green earth are New York investors surviving out there with taxes the way the way? I mean in some places you're dealing with school taxes alone of about eight to nine thousand a year. I can't seem to understand why people would even waste their time and money into a market like this. If someone wouldn't mind clarifying what exactly is going on? Or maybe even giving me advice into neighboring states that are more applicable to a newbie investor like myself in the tri-state area.
