Tips and tricks to save money on vendors

I really don’t see a subject on BP related to dealing with residential and commercial vendors so I wanted to start a tread and ask people

How do you save money dealing with installers, repair companies?

Any tips or tricks?

How do you know their business model is set to rip you off? Is it the low or free service call or is it how nice their trucks are and where there HQ are located?

Also, have you run into any rip offs you successfully contested? I had an AC guy take out a blower motor and after hiring him for a second job and then tell him no, I suspect he’s just a butcher in HVAC clothes.

I’m asking because I discovered that if I buy my own garage door opener then call them to install it, I save a lil change.

Don’t feel the need to answer all the questions! Just what you know best
