I think the problem really is one of intelligence. Both political parties have smart and dumb people who support them and the dumb ones are the loudmouths, proclaiming the purity of their beliefs and labeling their opponents instead of responding with reason. The smart ones are probably too busy to argue endlessly, so political discourse gets largely dominated by the morons.
