Moved to Iowa city almost two years ago now. Looking to get into REI. Would love to do some thing local but as I’m new too the real estate it’s tough to know where to start. I don’t have any resources beside to little time and and a car. My main question is, is Iowa city a god place to start? Thanks David Conley

Hello David,

Welcome to BP!  I live and work in Iowa City.  We own a few properties in Coralville and Riverside.  The pros of the IC market are: Strong appreciation, decent demand, and a recession resistant environment.  The main con is that it is a very expensive place to get into the investment game.

You might just want to start by looking at Zillow (for example) and see what prices are like for various properties.  There is also a Meetup that meets about every month.  It might be helpful.

I would encourage you to also look in the surrounding towns.  We have found good luck in the smaller communities where prices are not as high and rents are still strong (i.e. Riverside, Washington, Hills, etc.)

Best of luck!
