are collections required to be paid off in order to get loan?

within 2 months i will be applying for a home loan, did a credit check and on 680 range, my negative mark is that i have a old 3 years utility collection that is $4000, i want to spend most of my saved money into the house but im concerned about this collection, should i deal with it or not?
