Hey Kevin and welcome to BP! That question depends on a lot of different factors. What are you looking to accomplish? How much money do you earn/save? Are you looking to invest and on what scale?

Hi, Kevin and welcome.  I have long said that if I had a financial calamity (jobless, bankrupt, etc.) and needed to start over, I would buy a triplex or a quad.  Live in one, rent out the rest.  My tenants would pay for a place for me to live and put a little cash in my pocket.  I would then leverage this again and again.  If it is your primary residence, there may be programs available where you could get in with only a few percent down.

As Dan Barli stated, your goals certainly come into play.
