Newbie in Chicago IL looking to get into multi-family rentals

Hi, I'm a lawyer from Chicago.  I practice in the landlord/tenant area defending tenant's from unlawful evictions and suing landlords that unjustly keep security deposits.  I'm sure that will make me EXTREMELY POPULAR here.

My income fluctuates based on my cases every month, but in good months I'm able to save a decent amount of money.  I'm looking to supplement my income and build wealth by buying a multi-family property that I will owner occupy starting June 2018.  In the meantime I'm educating myself as much as possible on real estate.

I'm looking for property located close by one of the major transit lines for easy access to the courthouse downtown, and I may be doing my purchase as a partnership with a friend of mine.
