looking to invest outside of NY

Hi All,
My name is Karena and I was born and raised (and still live) in New York City. It's a crazy real estate market here and I am slowly realizing that although I'm only 32, I am not saving/investing my money well. Luckily, I was able to purchase a condo in a new development in Brooklyn in 2011, with my mom lending me a significant about of the down payment, which I still own and live in w/ a roommate.  Without, I would not be able to buy in NY then and especially now. After reading a bunch of investment books, I am now realizing that investing in the stock market is too volatile, mutual funds are no bueno, and that real estate is what I want to start investing in. Earning 0.1% on a savings acct with a big bank really is ridiculous. I work 6 days/ week and when I'm not working I love cooking, biking, and travelling.

I just started listening to the bp podcast, on episode 28 currently...there's so many eps! And I am excited and eager to learn about real estate for cash flow, long term investment and to eventually have some financial freedom. Can't wait to meet the peeps on biggerpockets, this community really seems to be a good and honest helpful forum for it's members.

Cheers!
