I am a new doctor in Portland, OR and am looking to buy my first investment, fixer upper property to live in for a few years. Would love some advice on how to do so effectively to give myself the best chance of making money in 3-5 years when I sell.

@Amy Robinson Hi and welcome to BP! Congrats on the new profession. I am investor living in Eugene. I invest out of state only because the local markets are tough for cash flow rentals. Portland is even harder. However, if you are looking for a place to live as well, that is a very different approach. Are you thinking single family residence, small multi (2-4)? Are you thinking of working on the home while you live in it, fix it over time with sweat equity? In addition to locating a wholesaler you can work with, you might also identify an experienced investor friendly realtor as the first member of your REI team. Good luck.
