House Hacker From Detroit, MI Area

Hello,

I am Stewart Olney, and I just stumbled upon this wonderful website the other day. I live in Harper Woods, which is sandwiched between the Grosse Pointe communities and Detroit. I am currently in pharmacy school, and will be finished in May 2015.

I started out in real estate by purchasing my own home with the help of my parents co-signing on my loan. in 2011, I had just started pharmacy school at Wayne State University in Mid-town Detroit, and I needed to find a place to stay closer to the school. (My parents live in Ortonville, which is about a 2 hour commute both ways). I didn't want to throw money away into paying rent on an apartment, so I decided to buy a house instead.

I purchased a 3 bed 1 bath 1100 square foot bungalow for $60,000. To help afford the mortgage, insurance, and taxes (675/month) I decided to rent the bedrooms out and sleep in the basement. I was house hacking and I didn't even know it.

My goals for real estate are to eventually own enough buy and hold rental property to replace my income as a pharmacist so that I can have the freedom to make time for my family whenever I wish. I also want to do some flips, and try to get into the wholesaling game so I can find good property for myself, and for others.

I ended up on bigger pockets because I stumbled across a podcast where Brandon was being interviewed that was posted on Youtube. Best random Youtube clip ever! I'm very excited for wherever Bigger Pockets can lead me!
