College Student -> Full Time (Brand New and Eager to Learn)
Hello Everyone!
My name is Lucas and I am currently a college student in Boston. I am finishing my last semester before moving to Chicago for a full-time job in September. I have always wanted to learn about Real Estate but have been too intimidated to get started. Now that I have a stable income and the drive, I want to finally pursue my curiosity for Real Estate.
I am not too certain on which specific strategies I would like to learn more about. I am interested in all of them and don't what to shut any door too early. If I had to choose a couple to look into first, it would be House Hacking, Mid-Term Rental, Short-Term Rental, and BRRRR. I am really interested in meeting any in-person groups in Boston (now-May) and Chicago (September-Onwards). I am open to Real Estate in any region.
I am willing to speak and connect with everyone. I believe local investors, agents, lenders, property managers, and contractors all have valuable insights, especially for someone brand new to Real Estate like my self. Any advice, recommendations, or comments are more than welcome!
Huge thanks to @Scott Trench for giving advice on introductions. I have been really impressed with everyone's knowledge and kindness. I look forward to connecting!

Hi Lucas,
Welcome to the world of real estate! It’s exciting to hear about your plans to dive into this field, and Chicago is a fantastic market to explore once you move there.
It sounds like you're on the right track with your interest in House Hacking, Mid-Term Rentals, Short-Term Rentals, and the BRRRR strategy. Each has its pros and cons, but starting with House Hacking can be a great way to ease into real estate while keeping your living expenses low—perfect for someone just starting their career.
Here are a few suggestions to get started:
- Education: Books like Set for Life by Scott Trench (sounds like you’re familiar with him!) or The House Hacking Strategy by Craig Curelop are fantastic starting points. Podcasts like BiggerPockets Real Estate Podcast are also goldmines of information.
- Networking: Check out real estate meetups in Boston through platforms like Meetup.com or local REIA (Real Estate Investor Association) groups. Once you move to Chicago, look for similar groups—Chicago has a vibrant real estate community.
- Building a Team: Since you’re new, connecting with a knowledgeable real estate agent, lender, and property manager in your target area is critical. They can help you navigate the market and avoid common pitfalls.
If you’re serious about taking the plunge, start analyzing properties in both Boston and Chicago markets to understand local trends. Even if you’re not ready to buy yet, practicing this skill will help you recognize a great deal when the time comes.
Feel free to reach out if you’d like to chat more—I’m happy to share what I know or help you connect with others in the field. Best of luck, and welcome to the journey!
