 I really enjoy playing basketball as well! 

If you are looking in the Midwest, to me Ohio should be at the top of your list. Other states you can look into are Indiana and Michigan. 

Columbus has been pretty popular for investors since a lot of tech activity is happening here. I would connect with a local realtor that also invests and connect with your core-4 team to start reviewing deals and learning the market.
