What To Do When Someone Leaves a Firearm in a Vacation Rental?
Last week I got a text that said "we left something in your cabin please call us"
(It is our policy not to call people so that everything can be document in text and we also rarely write back actual text messages that come off platform, but this is another discussion)
I wrote back: "What is it?"
They said: "A Shotgun. We don't need it back if you want to just keep it, it was junk anyway."
I should mention that guns are very legal and very common in our neck of the woods. We're not talking about NYC or Chicago or California, we're talking literally the woods in Tennessee.
Quick google search led me basically nowhere, but I did manage to find the advice "call the local police station" which is the advice that I took.
Police station did not seem to give a crap and acted like I was wasting their time, but said: "Sure bring it in we'll destroy it if they don't come pick it up."
Took the gun in to the police station and gave them our address. They said, oh that's not in our jurisdiction, take it to the other police station. Likely because they didn't want to bother with it.
We just wanted it off of our hands in case the guest used it to hold up a liquor store.
This situation will of course be HIGHLY market specific but here we found we were going above and beyond to take it to a police station that didn't want to deal with it.
Hope this info helps somebody someday.
