Microwave replacement

We recently rented our nephews home to tenents (we are acting as property managers for him while he is in college) and the above-the-stove microwave has stopped working. Is it acceptable to replace it with one that sits on the countertop? The home is older and was built by the original owner so the sizes don't match up to purchase a new above-the-stove microwave.
