Looking for Advice to begin my buy and hold strategy.

Hey guys, I recently decided that I want to own multiple properties, and be in charge of them. My ideal set up is about 15- 20 large unit properties. I'm thinking about 20- 50 unit MDUs. Now, obviously these properties are quite expensive, and I have no capital and next to no assets. I am nervous about bringing on an investor to start, and have considered going small first. Maybe get a 2-6 unit multi- family as my first. What are my options for loans? Is it safer to start up an LLC? I hear it helps protect personal assets, but they can be pricey as well. Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated. I am willing to do all of the work, but in the age of information, I feel like I am swimming in the ocean. There is no straight path that I can find.
