Evaluating rental market

What do you use to analyze a rental market to determine likely monthly rent amount and probable vacancy rate? I know Craigslist and Zillow can help identify monthly rent, but are more difficult to gauge the demand. How do you get a reasonable feel for how long it will take to get a decent tenant, especially in a market where you don't currently live?
