How to take care of your property when tenants take vacation

Hello all,

I'm curious to know what are some of the systems landlords put into effect to ensure that their property is safe when tenants will be away on vacation. 

I'm particularly interested in the systems implemented in the summer vs the winter months in the colder states. 

Do you also require that your tenants notify you before they take a vacation?
