Wanting to start owning rental properties

I’ll be 21 in June and Im in the military. I’ve decided the sooner the better and I would like to start investing in real estate and owning rental properties. Kinda iffy on where to start and what my first purchase should be. Any advice or help from anyone? I’m currently in North Carolina. I’d like to eventually own a multitude of properties not just a few. What should I do to take my first step and what exactly should I be looking for as my first purchase.
