Bedrooms off of a mechanical room?

i am looking at possibly buying a property that has a bed room in the basement (with a legal egree) but in order to get to the bed room you must walk through the Laundry /utility room. We've been told this makes it an illegal bedroom as has to come off a hallway or living space (fam room). I have never heard of this and I cant find it in a google search. Does anyone know if this is true?

I believe code requires to points of entrance/exit meaning a door from the interior of the home and a window or door to the exterior. I've never heard of a requirement to have a door from a living space or hallway.
