The compressor on an old (freon) AC unit is locked up and the coils are rusted. Thinking about replacing with used unit. Per Manual J calculator need approx 2 ton. The closet unit is ok. Wiring is good. The house is in high heat/humidity area near Galveston, TX. Any advice?

@Timothy Church is right -- you could just replace the coils if you were going to go with a used unit.  I wouldn't trust a used unit as much as a repair by my tech.

Check with your local laws, too. In Florida, we are no longer allowed to just replace a compressor without replacing the inside furnace unit (your closet unit) as well.
