Do you pay employment verification services?
I've managed my own properties, run my own credit checks via MrLandlord.com and done my own due diligence for a couple of decades, but now I'm running into these employment verification services that require a payment or subscription. WTF? In the past I've simply said no, and taken the pay stubs as proof enough with no issues, but this is getting annoying. Am I just being cheap not wanting to pay $46 just to verify employment and pay? So far I've never charged an application fee since my credit reports only cost $15, so do I charge tenants a special fee if their employers use one of these services? It seems petty to do that after they've submitted an application.
This is in a rapidly gentrifying area, I try and rent to college educated, upwardly mobile young people. The likelihood of someone scamming me with a photoshopped pay stub seems pretty low. My nose has been pretty good so far (knock on wood).
