Security deposit compound interest

Two part question:

1) When you've bought a property, has the previous owner included compound interest when they give you the check for tenants' security deposit?

2) What calculator do you use to determine compound interest due back to the tenant, or that they are entitled to withdraw from you after a given number of years (depending upon your state's law).
