What would you do to this kitchen?

I'm looking for ideas on how to spruce this kitchen up. I was thinking maybe replace the doors and paint the boxes but I'd like to go with a Java color and I'm afraid the boxes wouldn't match the new doors. I am planning on replacing the counters with a nice laminate and doing a tile backsplash. If the front under the sink wasn't missing a piece and the two doors under the sink were solid doors like the rest, I would just java stain everything at once. Is there a better way? The nice kitchen picture is the look I am going after.

I would paint them too since you are in that rental range with Formica. Darks and whites are hot right now, so I think either way, they will look and appealing to most renters
