Can I bring in drug dogs?

I have a problem tenant I'd like to get rid of, and if I had to make a bet I'd say they have illegal drugs somewhere in the unit, but I can't prove it. Of course, if I could prove this it would be immediate grounds for eviction.

Question is, am I allowed to hire a private drug dog to come in and sniff around? I am using the North Carolina standard lease, which basically gives me the right to enter the unit at any time without notice for an inspection...can that include bringing trained professional drug dogs with me?

I get where you're coming from but I'm not sure illegally gained evidence can be used as proof of anything. You are landlord, not law enforcement. Can you spell harassment lawsuit? Perform quarterly fire/safety inspections and respond to maintenance requests as needed to protect your property but stop there. What is the real issue? Noise? Smells? Visitors at odd hours? Parking? Complaints from neighbors? Talk to your tenant about it and don't renew the lease if that's what you need to do. Good luck.
