Best and cheapest way to determine property lines

Hey all.

I just recently purchased a house in Norwalk Ct and am house hacking. It's great thus far... except... we are looking to build a fence. When we told the neighbor about it which we thought were on our existing fence line (there are old poles from an old fence) he told us our property line is much less and the old poles are actually on his property.  I know we could get a surveyor but is there a cheaper way to look up property lines?  Thus far quotes on surveyors has been over a $1000.  Thanks in advance for your time.  Any help appreciated.

Would not cut corners on this one. It is important to know exactly where your line is especially putting up a fence. Curious when you bought it did it not come with plot maps ext??
