My First Deal - Rehab questions

I am in the option period on a multi-family unit in San Antonio. This is my first deal! I will walk through tomorrow with a contractor but my question is this. When you guys buy a property that needs some cosmetic work, do you usually hire a designer or expert to get their opinions or do you just tell the contractor what you want? Thanks for your input!
