Sealing New Pavers?

How important is it to seal pavers? My contractor tells me the sealant is very expensive. I'm putting in new pavers for a back yard patio. Is sealant important? Can it wait until there is more in the budget to buy the sealant? Or should it be done at time of install? Will they get stained otherwise?

Hi Jon S., I'm not a contractor but I have never sealed my pavers. The alternative is that an annual power wash with a high pressure sprayer will keep them looking good.
