Security Deposit return when couples separate

Had a young couple with a child split up. Girl moved out first ( he was stealing a part of the rent money - nice guy - haha ) and then he moved out a month later. We were happy this happened as we were not going to renew the lease anyways, which was up in another month.

So, after deductions for damages, there is some SD to be returned. I know the check is supposed to be made out to both tenants, but they live in separate homes now. Who do I send the check to? Can I split the amounts and send each a check? What if the original SD was paid by the girl with a check in her name only?

Any help appreciated.

This is what I would do.

Contact them both, tell them you have the check ready. make it out to BOTH NAMES, then they can deal with how to split it up. Not your problem, don't let them make it your problem.

Absolutely no legal advice given.
