Dealing with Squatters
What was your personal experience and how did you deal with them in a lawful manner?

Dealing with them "in a lawful manner" involves filing for eviction. Wisconsin Squatter Rights
Wisconsin doesn't believe it's a crime for someone to occupy a home without permission. Just another example of how screwed up our "advanced" society has become.
I would start by calling the police and reporting a break-in. Act as if it just happened or was just discovered right before the call. Bring proof of ownership, utility bills, whatever. Demand they leave immediately. If you are lucky, the police will show up and their presence will spook the squatter enough that they look for an easier target. If that doesn't work, go hire an attorney and prepare to spend money and time trying to correct this.
If it happened to me, I would use some creative methods to encourage them to leave my property. I recently read an article where the Owner created a lease for a couple of his buddies. They went into the home and settled in for a beer and pizza party. The squatter called the cops, the Landlord and his buddies showed the lease and confirmed their right to be there, the squatter had no evidence, and the police told them to leave, which they did.
We shouldn't need attorneys and judges to kick out trespassers.
