10 day notice question for NC

Hi BP folks.

I have a timing question in regard to sending out the 10 day notice to pay or quit after rent is not paid on the first of the month. This counts for NC. Can I send the note at the first day after rent was due and not paid, or do I need to wait 5 days until the late payment is due. I have talked to multiple investors and there seems to be no consensus about the right timing. Obviously, as a landlord, I want to minimize the time a tenant can live in a rental for free. Maybe someone with more eviction experience has the answer.
