Trouble with tenant seeking reimbursement for cancelling lease

I have acquired a property with a tenant who was on a month-to-month lease. They have advised me yesterday that they are moving out in 3 days. They are seeking reimbursement in rent however they did not give me 15 days notice. The tenant is stating that they will not turn over keys until they are reimbursed. By law, do I have to reimburse them?
