Proof of residency request from a tenant

Julia Marg
Posted

My tenant of three years has asked me for a written and signed proof of residency. She says it’s for tax purposes. Just wondering if anyone has received this request and if it’s legitimate. I have always been able to prove my own residency with a lease, bill, or drivers license and have never had to prove my residency for taxes.

Local school here does the same thing, requests a signed letter from the landlord proving residency. It's dumb.

@Julia Marg welcome to BP! I am guessing your tenant has no immigration status, no SSN and wants to pay taxes via TIN and needs a proof of residency? Other than that no clue.

Nope, she was born in the states as far as I know!

She says it for tax purposes though. School I can understand since a lot of people fraudulently attend districts they don’t live in… however, a utility bill does seem harder to forge than a letter anyways.

changing car registration, differing insurance rates, school districts (mentioned) rent credit on taxes, municipal residency requirement I can think of dozens of reasons someone might need it.
